Piping Freeze Protection
Coordinating heat tracing, insulation, electrical controls, and monitoring for water-filled piping in unconditioned areas.
The project
Water-filled fire protection piping passed through unconditioned portions of a residential development. WFPE evaluated how those exposure conditions affected the piping and developed freeze protection recommendations that addressed the pipe, its surroundings, and the systems supporting the protection measures.
Our approach
The analysis considered heat loss, insulation, heat-tracing cable, circuit capacity, and control requirements. We also addressed monitoring and the role of conditioned spaces. Treating these items together was essential: a cable selection alone would not document the full set of conditions needed for the proposed protection approach to operate.
What we delivered
WFPE provided engineering criteria for the heat tracing and related protection measures, including the assumptions and operating conditions underlying the recommendations. The deliverable gave the project team a coordinated basis for developing freeze protection for the evaluated piping.
