Metalworking Operations Code Review

Looking beyond the metal product to the fluids, operations, and building conditions that influence occupancy classification.

The project

A metalworking facility required an evaluation of its operations and fire protection requirements. Although the primary products were metal, the assessment also had to consider combustible machining fluids and how those materials were stored and used.

Our approach

WFPE reviewed the occupancy classification, building conditions, and applicable sprinkler triggers. The materials analysis distinguished storage, closed use, and open use and considered the quantities associated with each condition. This tied the occupancy evaluation to the actual operating assumptions rather than relying on the product description alone.

What we delivered

WFPE documented the classification and protection basis for the described operation. The report’s conclusions were conditional on the evaluated materials, quantities, and use, giving the owner a defined basis for future changes rather than a blanket exemption for all metalworking activities.
