Heated Chase Freeze Protection
Evaluating a building-envelope approach to protecting sprinkler piping in an unconditioned corridor.
The project
A project proposed a heated chase around sprinkler piping passing through an unconditioned area. WFPE evaluated how the chase would connect that piping to an adjacent conditioned space.
Our approach
The engineering letter addressed heat transfer from the interior, insulation at the exterior boundaries, and the construction details needed for the proposed approach. The opinion was conditional on those details and on maintaining the assumptions underlying the heated enclosure.
What we delivered
WFPE documented a freeze protection approach based on extending the conditioned envelope. The deliverable gave the project team specific construction conditions to coordinate, while recognizing the limits of insulation and protection under conditions outside the evaluated basis.
