Building Expansion Code Strategy
Separating the code questions behind a proposed additional floor and its intended uses.
The project
A building expansion introduced a proposed additional level with a mix of uses. The key question was how the change affected allowable building size and sprinkler requirements, including the implications of assembly use within the expanded building.
Our approach
WFPE evaluated height, area, number of stories, and occupancy classification as related but separate code questions. The analysis considered how a use could trigger protection requirements even where another threshold was not exceeded. It also identified the role of the authority’s occupancy determination in establishing the final code path.
What we delivered
The engineering analysis set out the conditions affecting the proposed expansion and the questions requiring resolution. It gave the project team a structured basis for design decisions without turning a conditional evaluation into an unconditional statement that sprinklers were unnecessary.
